New Guides for Window Installation Help Prevent Construction Problems
According to new step-by-step guides produced by the Applied Building Technology Group (ABTG), there are many different approaches to window installation that utilize Foam Plastic Insulation Sheathing (FPIS). The guides address four methods of window installation practices for FPIS including a standard method, window buck method, picture frame method, and rainscreen cladding method. The objective behind sharing these techniques was to help avoid potential construction defects while facilitating installation of code compliant, high performance window and wall assemblies.
When installing windows into a wall unit with FPIS, there are multiple factors that influence proper application. One of these factors is the thickness of the foam sheathing. There are three different types of FPIS, each with a variety of thickness that can accommodate different needs. However, according to ABTG, it is important that the sheathing have a minimum compressive strength of 15”. Additionally, if the sheathing is being used as a water resistant barrier (WRB) system, it must meet specific code requirements, and pass three different water resistance tests.
The size and configuration of the windows and the type of framing are also addressed as factors that influence proper installation. The ABTG guides cover steps from checking the angle and size of the wall frames to applying the sill flashings and sealants.
